The social media giant will lease a 36,000 sq ft building in Central London in 2012.

Facebook has announced it will relocate its current London base off Carnaby Street in Soho to Covent Garden in January 2012.

The social networking conglomerate has shunned Shoreditch’s Silicon Roundabout in favour of a 36,000 sq ft listed office property in the heart of Central London. In addition to the relocation of its 70-strong UK advertising sales team, the company is expected to recruit new staff as part of the expansion in the next 12 months.

“As Facebook’s growth continues, we are delighted to be expanding our operations in the UK with a move to a larger office in central London next year” commented Facebook’s vice president and European managing director Joanna Sheilds.

“With over 30 million people using Facebook every month in the UK, and over 750 million globally, we’re excited about the next phase in our development.”

The announcement comes as a number of other high profile tech companies search for new commercial property in the UK. Both Google and Twitter are thought to be searching for new office space in the capital, with Google rumoured to be searching in the King’s Cross area of the city.

Despite the Government placing a large emphasis on creating a “Tech City” in the East End of London, none of the three major internet giants have expressed an interest in leasing space on Silicon Roundabout.
